Fishing in Central New York

Greetings, fishermen and women!

My name is Sue and my husband's name is Tom. We are avid fisher people here in Central New York.

My fishing beginnings started in Canada when, as a child, my family would trek up to one of those isolated Canadian camps in the woods. The drive down the unpaved, gravel road seemed endless!

I loved that camp. We stayed in log cabins and went to the dining area in the morning for pancakes with real maple syrup and apple juice. Yum.

We kids would spend our days catching frogs in the water, walking in the woods, searching for beautiful rocks filled with quartz, and swimming.

The men would go fishing, with me tagging along. We would have to walk through the woods to get to the small lake loaded with fish.

I remember my grandfather taking off sunfish and other fish I caught as we sat on a large boulder jutting out over the lake. What patience he had!

That was my start in my love of fishing.

Then, years later, I met Tom. It was strange to meet a guy who loved the sport of fishing as much as me.

We would fish Oneida Lake and the river for bass and walleye. Sometimes it would be snowing and we'd be out there fishing! Or, we'd be up before the sun to get some fishing in before going to work. We were fanatics.

We put our fishing on hold to raise our two sons. And, now we are back at it.

This spring we fished Cross Lake, Onondaga Lake and Seneca River. There are some nice areas in the Seneca River that are isolated, quiet, and loaded with bass and pike.

Of course, with any fishing, the challenge is in the catch. And, it's been a hard year for me. I'm not getting the success I usually have. But, Tom is another story. He's caught small mouth, large mouth and pike, albeit patiently. I will say I caught a good sized pike and will post the picture here soon.

I look forward to getting to know the other fishing fanatics out there. And, to hear your fish stories, advice and tips. There's plenty of great places to fish here in New York and the rest of our GREAT COUNTRY.

Will give you a blow by blow description of our recent experiences soon.

Best regards,

Sue
